Hitch jacks, also known as trailer jacks or tongue jacks, are used to raise and stabilize a trailer so it can be attached to the towing vehicle. It’s one of many hitch accessories used to make the process of towing a little easier. Typically, hitch jacks attach onto the trailer’s tongue – the long beam at the front that extends out and connects with the towing vehicle. The jack is secured to that beam and extends vertically to the ground, where it has a metal base or even a wheel in some cases.

For the brakes to work, trailers must be connected to a tow vehile equipped with an electric-brake controller. Unlike surge brakes on a trailer, electric brakes are not independent of the tow vehicle. When you step on the brake pedal in the tow vehicle, the controller receives a signal from the brake-light switch that the brake has been applied. This causes the controller to switch higher current power to the trailer brake. The degree to which the trailer brake is applied is determined by the adjustments the driver makes to the controller.

When you tow a trailer behind your vehicle, all you really want to do is get your payload from one location to another with minimal effort. You don’t want the trailer to rock and rattle any more than is necessary, and you sure don’t want it to slow you down. Luckily, you have a friend in this endeavor: trailer bearings. You can’t see these towing components without dismantling your trailer’s wheel assembly, but bearings are in there doing you a world of good. They help to provide a smooth towing ride and prevent friction from slowing you down and unnecessarily wearing out your trailer’s parts. Without them, heavy loads could grind wheel movement down to a standstill.
